DIY Essential Oil Rub To Avoid the Holiday Sniffles

Looking for a way to stay healthy this holiday season? Try this DIY essential oil rub to keep those holiday sniffles at bay!

(Be sure to enter the giveaway at the end of this post!)

I still remember my daughter lying on the couch on Christmas day listening to the rest of the family enjoy the festivities in the other room. A very not-so-merry virus had hit her and she couldn’t enjoy that holiday much at all. And I was right by her side sharing in her misery, because that’s what moms do.

Things could have been worse and I’m a firm believer that we can find something to be thankful for in every situation, BUT I like my children to be well as much as possible, and especially when they are looking forward to an event, such as a holiday!

My children do take vitamins, homemade probiotics, immune herbs, and eat healthy foods to support their system, but I also like to incorporate essential oils!

I’m going to share a simple DIY essential oil rub that you can use especially this holiday time of year when candy and baking are plentiful and your kids need that extra immune boost!

Lemon Essential Oil

When I think of lemon oil, my first thoughts go to its awesome smell and how great it works in homemade cleaners and room sprays, but this oil is also a good choice for illness! It’s a disinfectant, and it promotes lymphatic drainage, which helps you get over colds faster! Buy here

Cinnamon Essential Oil

Besides smelling like Christmas, cinnamon essential oil is also cleansing, relaxing, and helps support the respiratory system. Buy here

Tea Tree Essential Oil

How To Relieve Sinus Congestion With Essential Oils

How To Relieve Sinus Congestion With Essential Oils | Jills Home Remedies | Relieve the misery of sinus congestion with these powerful essential oils!

Having your sinuses congested might make you feel miserable, but you don’t have to stay that way! I’m going to show you how you can quickly relieve sinus congestion with the power of healthy essential oils!

Have you ever had your sinuses congested so badly that you couldn’t breathe in or out of your nose? Not only that, but they were so completely stopped up that you could hardly swallow? Just try swallowing while holding your nose really tightly and you’ll see how difficult it is.

That’s the predicament I was in a few weeks ago and I had a tough time even resting because of it. Everything was completely stopped up. I grabbed a few essential oils and was able to clear my congestion considerably in just a few minutes!

 Here’s how to do it.

How To Relieve Sinus Congestion With Essential Oils

Ingredients

2 drops eucalyptus essential oil (buy here)
2 drops rosemary essential oil (buy here)
2 drops peppermint essential oil (buy here)
2 drops thyme essential oil (buy here)

Directions

  1. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil.
  2. Pour into a pan or bowl.
  3. Add essential oils to water and stir.
  4. Drape a towel over your head and hold head over the steaming bowl.
  5. Inhale vapors deeply for 3-5 minutes.
  6. Repeat as needed.

What I did was breathed the vapors deeply for about 3 minutes, took a break for a minute or two, and then repeated the essential oil steam for another 3 minutes or so and took a break, etc. until my sinuses were clear. This so greatly relieved my congestion so that I could breathe again!

I repeated this procedure throughout the day if I got stuffy again. It is necessary to make a whole new pan of essential oil steam if you repeat later in the day as the essential oils vaporize into the air and do not stay potent in the pan of water.

How To Make Essential Oil Hand Sanitizer That is Actually Safe for Your Kids

hand-sanitizer Making my own hand sanitizer has been on my list of to-dos for a looong time! I am so happy to say that I’ve finally made some! Yay! I’m going to show you how very simple it is to make homemade moisturizing hand sanitizer. With the approaching winter months and cold/flu season, killing germs is on most of our minds. I am one of those that cleans the shopping cart handle and carries a (natural) hand sanitizer in my purse. But it’s important to use natural hand sanitizer and I’ll explain why.

Why Traditional Hand Sanitizers Are Not OK

I recently looked up the ingredients of the Purell brand hand sanitizer because it is a popular one. While the chemicals in this hand sanitizers are not listed in the high zone for causing cancer, the ingredients are still not natural or, in my opinion, completely safe. In this post,  I’m going to focus on just 2 aspects of traditional hand sanitizer ingredients that concern me the most.

Alcohol

Have you heard about the kids getting drunk from ingesting a few squirts of hand sanitizer? This is due to the alcohol content. The high alcohol content makes store-bought hand sanitizers not safe to me. Even if a child doesn’t eat the sanitizer, the alcohol is getting into the bloodstream via the skin. Hand sanitizers contain about 63-70% of pure alcohol. Yikes! That is not something I want to continuously put on my children’s skin.

Bad for the Immune System

Hand sanitizer strips the hands of both good and bad bacteria. This is not a good thing since the body uses germs to build strength and help the immune system fight illness. So in other words, the hand sanitizer that is supposed to help you NOT get sick can actually contribute to you GETTING sick. This is one reason that it’s so good to let your children play in the dirt, run around outside barefoot, and play with animals. Kids that stay indoors too much are often sickly looking and acting. I am all about keeping the hands washed and cleaning dirty handles that may have germs, but let’s do it in a safe way!
