How to Teach Your Teen To Make A DIY Acne Remedy (Plus a Giveaway)

How To Teach Your Teen To Make A DIY Acne Remedy | Jills Home Remedies | Help your teen say goodbye to embarrassing acne with this DIY Acne Remedy!

One of the most embarrassing things to me when I was a young teenager was acne. I didn’t have it as bad as some, but I did have it worse than others. I was willing to do ANYTHING to have a clear face. My mom had no knowledge of natural health and I was far from the natural journey that I’m on now. I was completely clueless about anything I could do to help myself.

This lack of knowledge landed us in a dermatologist office. Not that I’m saying dermatologists can’t ever be of help, but this dermatologist prescribed me daily antibiotics (for SIX years!) and an even stronger medicine for 6 months that left open sores on my skin and the medicine is now on a list of being not safe (obviously).

I honestly at the time believed all medicine to be great if it improved the symptoms and I gave no thought to the warnings and possible side effects printed on the inserts. All I knew was that my face stayed clear as long as I took the medicine! Needless to say, I’ve paid greatly with my health as a result of taking the medication and am still on the pathway of learning and healing.

I say all of this because I am SO thankful I can teach my children how to treat acne naturally! I don’t want them to suffer as I have due to lack of knowledge. I think it’s important to not only make natural medicines for my girls, but to TEACH them how to make them themselves so they are equipped for the future.

(BTW – I have a great giveaway at the end of this post! Be sure to check it out! You could win a gift card to use toward herb books or any books of choice!)

What Causes Acne?

I think it’s important to teach teens what causes acne. I’m not going to go into depth with this post, but the true cause of acne is basically because of a toxic body and an imbalanced hormone system, compromised liver, and poor digestive system. The cause of this is diet. Sugar, fast food, packaged food, etc. all have chemicals that cause the body to become toxic. When teens hit their hormone changing years, things get worse and toxins push out of the body in the form of acne. There may be bacteria that lives on the skin that can contribute to acne, but the root cause is TOXINS. Detox baths on a regular basis help with this.

Teach your kids about nutrition and research together what the ingredients are in the food you eat. It’s pretty difficult (though not impossible) to consume a “perfect” toxin-free diet. I certainly don’t eat a perfect diet, but I eat a lot better than I used to and am always trying to improve this area. Teaching your kids about true nutrition will hopefully help them make better food choices.

Even if you are not up to addressing diet or detoxing in your teen’s life right now, this acne remedy WORKS regardless! I may just be bold enough to say that it works better than any medication (in my experience), and it’s a whole lot safer. I made this acne remedy for a teenage guy that exhausted medication at the dermatologist and thought nothing would help. BUT this acne remedy did work for him!

Identify the Plant

Plantain is the featured plant in this recipe for acne! And it grows everywhere all over the world (except Antarctica). You should have plenty growing in your yard or somewhere nearby. It’s one of the most common “weeds” around. Make sure you pick plantain from an area that is not sprayed with pesticides. It’s important for your kids to recognize herbs confidently so they can use them safely and successfully.

Here’s a beautiful plantain plant in full bloom! It will grow these seed pods in the mid to late summer. The leaves, however, start growing in spring and can be used anytime!

You can also purchase dried plantain here if you can’t find fresh. You’ll just use a different amount for the recipe, but I’ll make note of that below. It’s super simple either way!

Plantain is an astringent herb, meaning it has drawing properties. That’s just what we need for acne! We want to draw the toxins out!

Here’s the front and back of a plantain leaf I picked. It’s a smooth leaf with raised veins on the back of it. The number of veins depends on how big the leaf is. Also take note that the bottom of the leaf has a purplish/reddish color.

Gather the Supplies

For this recipe, you’ll only need raw apple cider vinegar, plantain, and a jar! Use whatever size jar you wish, depending on how much you want to make at a time. We’ve already discussed how plantain helps acne, but raw apple cider vinegar does too! It’s also an astringent and with regular use, can help pull those impurities out and clear up the skin. So with the plantain and the vinegar, you’ve got a powerful weapon against acne on your hands!

Concerned about the smell of vinegar on your face? No worries. It disappears after a few minutes.

DIY Acne Vinegar

Ingredients

  • Plantain
  • Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Jar

Directions

  1. Wash plantain
  2. Tear plantain into smaller pieces to help “bruise” the leaves and release the properties. You can also crush the leaves with a glass jar.
  3. Fill a jar with fresh plantain (leaving a 2 inch headspace) or fill it halfway with dried plantain.
  4. Fill the jar with the raw apple cider vinegar, leaving a 2 inch headspace.
  5. Cover with a lid and leave in a cabinet for 2-4 weeks.
  6. Shake jar daily or at least a few times a week to keep things well distributed.
  7. After 2-4 weeks, strain the herb out and retain the liquid.

Note: Apply the plantain vinegar morning and evening everyday to face, back, chest, or wherever you have acne. Don’t wash the vinegar off but allow it to do its work all day and then all night after you apply it before bed. You can apply makeup over it once it dries. Because the plantain pulls toxins out, you will most likely have more breakouts for a few weeks before it clears, but be consistent every day and you’ll reap the rewards!

Natural Remedy For Acne

young woman cares for face skin

Though acne is supposed to only trouble teenagers, many adults end up with breakouts too.  I wish no one had to deal with this embarrassing problem, but wishing simply won’t make it go away.

If you suffer from acne, whether a teenager or adult, there is a solution to it that is far better and healthier than popping pills in your mouth or smearing medicated cream on your face!

In fact, I’ve been told that this remedy works even better than the strongest pills and creams on the market.  Whatever you do, don’t make the mistake like I did of taking medicine that will have a negative impact on your health.  Click here to read how I’ve suffered for years from the effects of taking antibiotics prescribed to me for acne.

Let’s first talk about what causes acne.  Acne is caused by an inward toxicity ~ it’s literally toxins pushing their way out through the skin.  A healthy body is not going to have problems with acne.  Toxins or hormonal imbalances can cause acne, and that’s why many start getting acne when they hit puberty.

Hormonal imbalances are caused by insulin resistance from too many sugary or boxed food and an overall poor diet (fast food, processed foods, junk food, etc. ~ homemade from scratch meals are the best! If it comes in a box or you have to drive through somewhere to buy it, it most likely is bad for you! :) )  Click here to read other things that can throw off hormones specifically in women.

Do you remember the herb that’s an astringent, meaning it pulls out toxins and poisons? ~ It’s plantain!  Here’s a very easy inexpensive way to clear up acne, and even acne scars using plantain and a little vinegar.

Don’t know what plantain looks like?  It grows somewhere near you unless you live in Antarctica.  Click here to read my post on wasp stings that includes pictures of this awesome herb God created!

Natural Remedy For Acne

1. Pick enough plantain to fill a jar – you can use a pint or quart – depending on how much tincture you want.  You can also buy dried plantain here and fill the jar halfway with it.  You would fill to the top with fresh and halfway with dried.
2. Wash fresh plantain.

3. Next you want to be sure you “bruise” the leaves to release the powerful properties.  I always crush them with the edge of a glass cup and then tear them up some.  You can do several leaves at a time to make it quicker.

4. Place them in the jar to the top.  Don’t pack it down or too tightly.  You want there to be enough leaves in there to make a strong tincture, but loose enough to be able to shake well.

5. Next, pour apple cider vinegar to the top of the jar.

6. Let the tincture sit in a cool dark place for at least 2 weeks.  I did mine for 3 weeks this time.  You can put it in a cabinet or the basement – something like that.  It’s very important to shake it everyday or at least once a week so mold doesn’t form.  This is what is looks like after about 3 weeks.

7. Next, strain the plant material out of the liquid.

 8. Pour the liquid back in a clean jar and label with the date so you don’t forget what it is and what it’s for.  It’s a good idea to use a funnel to pour it into the jar.  Also, I pour some in a squeeze bottle for convenience to use this on the face.

9. Squeeze the tincture onto a cotton ball and use all over your face 2 or 3 times a day.  Don’t wash it off – give the plantain time to pull out the toxins.  Put this on your face after you wash it in the morning and at night.  You want to do this everyday for 2 or 3 weeks or until your face is clear.  If you’re concerned about walking around smelling like a pickle, don’t worry-the smell fades after a few minutes.

Tips:
  • Don’t wipe your face with the cotton ball and dip it back into the jar – this will contaminate the tincture and make it not as effective.  The squeeze bottle is a  very convenient and clean way to do this.
  • This may make you more sensitive to the sun – so be aware of that.
  • I use Bragg’s Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar.  This vinegar has not been heated and therefore contains living enzymes that is very good for your skin.  Some people use just this vinegar for acne, but when it’s combined with plantain, you get a more effective remedy!
  • This may clear up the acne you have now, but there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed for it to not come back.  Slowly start to change your diet to more wholesome foods.  I also highly recommend detoxing your body to remove toxins and heavy metals from your body.  Here’s an inexpensive, effective detox that I recommend ~ Detox +
  • I also highly recommend doing a parasite cleanse.  Many people suffer from worms and parasites and don’t even know it.  (YUCK – I know!!!)  Click here for a good parasite kit and suggestions on how to take it.  If you clean up your inside, it helps the outside! :)
  • If you have acne really bad, it may take longer to clear up your face.  Just be consistent! :)
  • Vinegar tinctures last about 6 months.  It’s recommended to refrigerate the extra – though I wouldn’t put the squeeze bottle in there – that would be cold on the face!
  • This will make your face break out worse for a few weeks as the plantain pulls out the impurities – but stick with it because you’ll enjoy the results!
Click here to buy dried plantain if you prefer, or are doing this in the winter time when plantain can’t be found in your area.  Remember to only fill the jar halfway with dried plantain.

My personal favorite apple cider vinegar is Braggs.

You can make this EASY and inexpensive remedy for acne and be on your way to a clear face.

I wish I’d known about this as a teenager.  It would have saved me a lot of money and heartache!
