Polycystic Ovarian Syndrom {PCOS} affects about 1 out of every 15 women. The symptoms tend to begin in the early teen years. Many times birth control pills are prescribed for this condition, which only throws hormones further off balance in the long run and are not a good solution, in my opinion. PCOS happens when a women doesn’t ovulate, which leads to many other problems, including multiple cysts on the ovaries.
Other symptoms may include:
- Acne
- Extra facial and body hair
- Menstrual abnormalties
- Thinning Hair
- Obesity
- Infertility
- Emotional Pain
- Mental Anxiety
Before we consider natural remedies for this condition, we need to look at what causes it. Like many health problems, the main cause is poor nutrition. Eating a diet high in sugar and refined carbs is a big culprit. Other causes of PCOS are:
- Stress
- Lack of Exercise
- Hormone Imbalance
My Natural Remedy Suggestions for PCOS:
- Change your diet. Limit things like fast food, chips, soft drinks, refined sugars, white pasta, white rice, etc. Be an ingredient reader! Avoid harmful ingredients like MSG, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, etc. Changing your diet will result in a great improvement in your health. Work toward eating 60% of your food raw, eating lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds, etc. It can take a while to change eating habits {I’ve been there, and I’m still working on it myself!}, but just start where you can and keep improving it as time goes on.
- Exercise daily. I love using the rebounder daily.
- Take hormone balancing herbs. I have taken saw palmetto, red clover and fenugreek will successful results in balancing my hormones. You can read specific instructions here. The HB Formula is a great liquid option for hormone balance. Another great supplement I discovered within the last year that I probably recommend the most for a condition like this is the Female Reproductive Formula by Dr. Christopher. This formula nourishes the female reproductive system and works to correct any malfunctions. It balances hormones so that your emotional and mental well-being will be in tact. Imbalanced hormones can lead to some crazy emotions! 🙂
*Be consistent with these remedies. It takes a while to balance things out and get your body to a healthy state so it can heal itself. Determine to change your lifestyle and take the supplements for at least 2-4 months, depending on the severity of your case. We can almost always correct our health problems naturally!

I know of several people that healed by switching to a no grain/no dairy/no sugar/no legume diet.- What some refer to as the Paleo Diet, whether people agree with the term Paleo Diet or not, it has healed a lot from PCOS when they cut these things out.

Thank you for sharing – diet does play such a huge role in our health!

I was diagnosed with PCOS at 17. At that point I thought my life was over. The embarrassing symptoms, the irregular periods and the hoorible flow/cramps that accompanied the periods that came. I am now 21 and married. My husband and I want to try to have a child. I have searched thousands of times, trying to find some way to help restore natural balance in my body. I am going to try the natural hormone suppliments listed in your article and change my diet. I really hope it works, because 2 years ago I listened to the dr. and went on a strict diet and exercise program. I lost 60lbs, but still had horrible symptoms. Thanks for all the tips and advice. Time to start my journey to recovery and a new family.

I was diagnosed with PCOS at age 21 and had a very hard time getting pregnant. I changed the way I ate, started exercising, but most important I took herbs. Vitex, Saw Palmetto and Fenugreek helped me balance my hormones after about 4 to 5 months, I got pregnant a month later, good luck!

quick question: Is eating lots of grains and beans not good if you have PCOS?
Jills Home Remedies says
I have read recommendations of eating more grains and beans if you have PCOS. I would balance it with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.

I would not take the liquid formula and capsules at the same time. I would choose one or the other.

I’m curious to hear your thoughts of soy consumption for those with PCOS.
Jills Home Remedies says
I really don’t have a very good opinion of soy at all. I would tend to not recommend it – but that’s just me. 🙂

Poor nutrition doesn’t “cause” PCOS. It can definitely exacerbate the symptoms, but people don’t develop PCOS because they eat poorly. The cause of PCOS is currently unknown.
Jills Home Remedies says
I do agree that the modern medical field does not have the answer for the cause of PCOS, but sugar and processed foods are one of the causes. Most diseases and cancer are a result of poor nutrition. If we feed our body mostly dead food, it will result in health problems.

I was taking a low blood pressure medication for my PCOS and even though my facial hair was going away and my hair was growing, I found the side effects to be more of a bother then the actual PCOS. I was diagnosed in my early 30’s and had two children at that point so it was a big shock to me since I had heard it was usually diagnosed at a younger age. I asked the doctor why this happened and she had no explanation. Is it common to diagnosed at that age?
Jills Home Remedies says
I have personally known most women that are diagnosed with PCOS to be in their teens or early twenties, but it can affect anyone of reproductive age. I would say that it is more unusual after having 2 children and being in your thirties. I would just work on diet and hormone balance. Best wishes to you!

I was diagnosed with PCOS at 18. I had three children, each of the pregnancies coming immediatly after getting off BC Pills. The pills did nothing for my symptoms, they did however give me a cycle I could track and seemed to help the pain from the cysts. A year and a half ago (at 34) I started a completely gluten free diet. Within two months I started having my period regularly for the first time ever, without hormonal assistance. I have little to no discomfort and all of my additional symptoms have decreased. It’s AMAZING the difference diet can make!!!
