When it comes to boosting the immune system, echinacea and astragalus are two herbs that are fabulous for the job!  Today I’m going to show you how to turn these herbs into a simple, effective tincture to help your family stay well.

First let’s briefly talk about why these herbs are good for the immune system.

Echinacea

Echinacea is a powerful natural antibiotic and infection fighter.  It boosts the T cells directly, therefore boosting the immune system.

Astragalus

Astragalus increases white blood cell count activity, which stimulates the immune system and helps fight off infection.  It increases stamina and boosts energy.

Making an Echinacea & Astragalus Tincture:

Combine

  • 1/4 cup echinacea root
  • 1/4 cup astragalus root

in a double boiler.

  1. Pour 1/2 cup of water and 1 1/2 cups of vegetable glycerin over the herbs.
  2. Simmer in a double boiler for 2 hours. If you don’t have a double boiler, simply place a smaller pan over a larger pan instead. Make sure you don’t let the water boil out of the bottom of the boiler! That’s easy to do when simmering something for this length of time.
  3. After 2 hours, strain the herbs through a fine strainer, cheesecloth, or a clean white cotton t-shirt.

Now you have an immune tincture that you made yourself and saved a lot of money while you were at it!

Glycerin tinctures have a shelf life of about 2-3 years.

How To Take Your Immune Tincture

The recommended dosages:

  • Adults: 1 dropperful
  • Children: 1/2 dropperful

If you wish to build the immune system because you hear of an illness going around that you would rather avoid, administer the medicine 1-3 times a day for a week or two. If an actual sickness strikes, you can administer the dosage amount every hour or every 2 hours the first day. On the second and third days, give it less frequently as patient improves {maybe 3-5 times a day}. reOn days 3 on, administer the medicine 1-3 times a day {depending on how the patient is doing} for a total of 7-10 days.

What are your favorite immune-boosting medicines?
