Lavender Lemonade for Headaches and Stress

We had such a cool June here in the Midwest, but July has roared in with its typical humid summer heat. Lemonade and summer go hand in hand, so it’s no surprise that a cold glass of this lemonade helps a person to handle the heat a tad bit better. In this post, I want to quickly show you how to make lemonade with lavender flowers as another unique and healthy twist to this common, refreshing drink.

Recently my little girl wanted to make me some red clover lemonade, but unfortunately the red clover we normally find growing in the old garden spot did not grow there as it normally does. We decided instead to make lemonade with some dried lavender that I have on hand. 

Lavender is one of my favorite herbs because it helps headaches and stress. It’s a very soothing and fragrant flower. I love inhaling lavender’s scent, and I enjoy adding the little purple flowers to tea mixes and cookies. The essential oil is quite useful too. One of my favorite ways to dissolve headaches is to place lavender essential oil on a diffuser necklace and wear it for about 30 minutes. 

The following recipe for lavender lemonade is similar to the recipe that you find in my How To Make Red Clover Lemonade post, and yet it’s different enough that I’m sharing it with you today.

One thing to note is that depending on how strong of a lavender flavor you would like in your lemonade, you can add up to 1/4 cup of lavender flowers. If you want just a touch of lavender flowers, you would probably just want to add 3 tablespoons. Also, the beautiful purple from the lavender flowers does not make your lemonade that color. I was surprised that it turns out to be a yellow/brown color. Some people add food coloring to their lemonade to make it a pretty purple. I personally try to avoid the fake colorings, but if you have natural food coloring, you can add one drop of blue and one drop of red to achieve a pretty result.

  1. Bring 3 cups of water to a boil and remove from heat
  2. Add dried lavender flowers and honey. Stir while hot until honey is dissolved.
  3. Cover pan with a lid and steep 15 minutes
  4. Strain the lavender flowers 
  5. Add lemon juice and the last 2 cups of cold water to the lavender tea.
  6. Add ice and refrigerate

How I Healed My Heart Palpitations Overnight

Have you ever lived with heart palpitations? If you haven’t, let’s just say it’s quite an aggravation!  The palpitations are not normally a sign of anything really serious, but they are a sign that something in your body needs attention.

A couple months ago I woke up to my heart pounding and beating irregular. It was a far too familiar feeling, as I lived with them for many, many months when I was a teenager/young adult.  It’s not that the palpitation are painful, they are just very annoying.  It’s kind of like being aware of your heart beating non-stop.  Of course I know my heart is constantly beating and working to keep me alive, but I don’t want to be aware of it all the time.  Heart palpitations are feelings of your heart fluttering, pounding, skipping beats, beating fast, beating slow.  The palpitations can occur in the chest or throat, and they can get worse when you bend over and do various activities.  For me they occurred some at night too, so there was little rest from them.

When I suffered from palpitations years ago, I knew nothing about natural health, nor had I considered the concept of figuring out the cause of health issues instead of dealing with symptoms only.  So let’s just say that I suffered for a long time.  I saw more than one doctor who all told me I was completely healthy and just prescribed me an anti-depressant (which I did not take).  I eventually found my way into natural health and was treated by a natural chiropractor.  I don’t remember everything he had me take, but the natural supplements he gave me certainly took care of the palpitations too!

Causes of Heart Palpitations

There is more than one condition that causes heart palpitations, so it may be difficult to know the cause if it isn’t something you’ve already dealt with.  There may be one cause, or there may be a few different ones.  When our bodies react by causing something like irregular heart function, our body is trying to get our attention and let us know that something is wrong and needs corrected.  Our bodies are not asking us to take medication to merely try to correct a symptom.  Our body needs nourished and healed.

Anxiety and stress is probably the biggest underlying cause of heart palpitations.  Most of us lead very busy, stressful lives, and we don’t eat diets that give us enough living nutrients to help our bodies handle the stress.  This results in symptoms like heart palpitations, panic attacks, feelings of be overwhelmed, unable to handle life, depression, being anxious and fearful to do normal activities.  When I began to experience the heart palpitations, I figured it was due to anxiety and stress.  When I first experienced these almost 20 years ago, it was a side effect of medication I was taking.  I really compromised my health all those years ago by taking the medication and all these years later I’m finding myself with some of the same symptoms.  But this time I know how to treat it safely and naturally.

How I Healed My Heart Palpitations Overnight 

I have been reading this year in Rosemary Gladstar’s Herbal Recipes For Vibrant Health.  This book has a lot of great information on panic attacks, anxiety, depression, and healing the nervous system.

This paragraph in her book caught my attention:

“Symptoms of mental distress or disorders such as irritability, nervousness, panic attacks, excess fear, depression, or suicidal tendancies often indicate a B-vitamin deficiency….B vitamins are most effective taken as a complex.”

Dealing with mental or emotional distress often calls for healing it from several different angles. I was already drinking a nerve tonic (soon I’ll have to share my favorite-so-far recipe also taken from this book), but after reading about B-vitamin deficiency, I knew I needed to add it to my regime.  I purchased Garden of Life Raw B Complex. Natural Remedies For Cold Sores

Cold sores, (also called fever blisters), are groups of small blisters on the mouth.  They can leak clear fluid and scab over, taking anywhere from several days to 2 weeks to heal.  They are caused from the herpes simplex virus – (HSV).  It is said that nearly everyone in the world carries this virus, but that it stays dormant in some and becomes active in others, causing the sores on the mouth or other areas of the body.

So what triggers a cold sore?  

The main cause is stress.  Stress is mentioned with a lot of ailments, isn’t it?  You can’t completely avoid stress, you can help control it though by eating healthy.  

Healthy eating minimizes the effects of stress on our bodies.  Foods that are acid forming should be limited, like: chocolate, table salt (unrefined sea salt is great!), sugar, soybean, soft drinks, and coffee.  

Diet is another main subject mentioned when addressing ailments, and I feel like I repeat it all the time, but eating poorly or unbalanced is the main source of health problems of any kind – so I guess I’ll keep repeating myself! (I need to hear it too!)  🙂

Natural Remedies for Cold Sores

  • Place hydrogen peroxide on the cold sore for a few minutes
  • Apply Raw Apple Cider Vinegar to the sore for several minutes
  • Mix salt and toothpaste and apply
  • Put aloe vera on it the moment you feel it coming on – you have to apply this all the time or at least 3 times a day – the fresh gel is better than aloe vera cream.
  • Petroleum jelly
  • Warm Tea Bag
  • Olive leaf is a natural antibiotic that has been effective for cold sores.  Extract the juice from the leaf and apply.  Click hereto buy olive leaf.
  • Garlic clove – place the cut side of a garlic clove on the sore.
