How To Clear Sinus Congestion

Sinus congestion can be the most miserable part of a sinus infection.  To drain your sinuses, try one of the remedies below:
One of my favorite remedies is to make an herbal steam.  To do this, simply boil 2 cups of water and add 1/2 oz. of herbs.  Remove from heat and allow to steep 20 minutes, covered.

 Some herbs I recommend are:

  • Chamomile
  • Eucalyptus
  • Mullein

When your herbs are finished steeping,  place a towel over your head and hold your face over the pan.  Breathe the steam in deeply for 15-20 minutes until congestion is clear.  Blow your nose often while you do this.

This remedy is also good for coughing, chest congestion (mullein works great to heal the lungs!) and nasal congestion.
Other remedies:
  • Eat raw garlic – you can mince the garlic and eat it on bread if you have a hard time eating it plain.
  • Here’s a recipe from Earth Clinic:

Heat these ingredients and drink hot!:
                    1 cup tomato juice

                    1 tsp chopped fresh garlic
                    1/2 tsp of hot sauce
                    1 tsp lemon juice
a pinch or two of celery salt for flavor

Note:  Be sure to use these remedies more than once, say 3-4 times a day until completely free of congestion.
There are healthy options to having clear sinuses without taking over-the-counter medicines that have harmful side effects!  What are your favorite natural home remedies for sinus congestion?

How old does a child need to be before using the steam method?

I use eucalyptus essential oil rubbed into the chest to clear up coughs. For kids over one, I make “honey tea”: just warm water, add honey and a bit of lemon. The honey helps coat their throat and calms down their cough!

I know those that have used the steam method for as small as babies. A great idea for babies and small children is to make a tent over a small table with a blanket and sit under there with the bowl of herbal steam. Use a flashlight and read books – tickle and laugh – the harder they laugh, the better, so the steam gets deep into the lungs. Who says home remedies can’t be fun? 🙂
The chamomile is especially good for children, but I would use the other things also if it’s all I had.
I love your remedies for cough! Thanks for sharing!

We raked a 6'x6' square for each package of spores and spread the spores on the ground. We then covered them with leaves and hope to have lots of mushrooms next summer! It's a good idea to plant them right before a rain so the rain can help spread and germinate the spores.
