How To Make An Herbal-Infused Oil

Making an herbal oil is very easy, just like all of the do-it-yourself medicines I make!

In the video below, I’m making a comfrey oil, but you can make an herbal-infused oil with any herb, or combination of herbs by using the same technique!
Directions:
  • Fill a jar to the top with fresh herb or half-way with dried herbs
  • Cover the herb with olive oil
  • Place the jar in the oven for one hour at 100 degrees
  • Set jar on counter for one to two weeks, covered
  • Strain and squeeze out the herb
  • Enjoy your lovely green oil! πŸ™‚

Hi This sounds pretty easy to do, but I’m not sure what to do with the oil once it’s made? HOw do you use it? Thanks!

You would put the oil on any area that needs healing, like bruises, burns, burst veins, bumps, broken bones, torn ligaments, rashes etc. I would apply at least 3 times a day. Wrap the area if the injury is on a place of the body that the oil could be rubbed off.
Thanks for the question and for stopping by! πŸ™‚

I am stopping by from Women Living Well and am so excited I found your blog! I make tinctures with herbs but was not sure about oils. I was never sure how long they last or how to keep them. Once the oil is decanted, do you know what the “shelf life” is?

I am looking forward to spending a lot of time here!

Hi, Jamie! I’m so glad you’ve found me! The shelf life is about a year. You can add 1/2 tsp. of vitamin E oil to give it a shelf life of 2 years. Nice to meet you – keep in touch!

Just watched this with the kid. I didn’t know it was so easy–wow. What if you can’t get the oven to 100? Would setting it in a sunny window work?

Thanks for linking it up at Thrifty Thursday!

Anna, my oven setting starts at 150 degrees, but my oven does turn on and get warm if I turn it to the empty space on the dial before the number starts. Try that, or just turn your oven on the lowest setting and shorten the time that the oil is in there. Or place the jar in a crockpot on the warm setting. Good to hear from you, friend. πŸ™‚

I really want to try this but I am a total dummy when it comes to using herbal oil. What type of ailments does it treat? πŸ™‚ (And thanks for linking up to Thrifty Thursday by the way!)

I loved your video, it really helps a newbie like me to see how you do it. I will definitely be looking forward to the second phase! I do have a question, maybe a dumb one but I am an American living in Europe – – is that 100 degrees Farenheit or Centigrade?

Hi Jill, I live in the Netherlands so had to order the Comfrey from the USA (dried version). I made the infused oil the slow way and today the salve – green is right!!. Anyway, thanks for raising my awareness regarding comfrey. BTW I added some lavender to the salve as well. Thanks so much for your blog, I really learn a lot and enjoy it too!

I am highly allergic to olive oil, can I use grapeseed oil or a combination of oils when doing an infusion?

Sure you can use something different like sweet almond, jojoba, grapeseed or sunflower oils. Thanks for the question!

Hi! I am highly allergic to olive oil; can i use a different oil instead (grapeseed) or a combination of oils (sweet almond, coconut, grapeseed)?

Thank you for your suggestion! I tried using sweet almond oil with some mint leaves. i just placed it in dark spot for a few days, but when I took the lid off it was rancid.

I did the same with some lemon rinds in grapeseed oil and the oil was rancid in 2 days.

The amt was in the teaspoons, so I skipped the oven. Do you think this is why my oils spoiled?

In advance, thank you for your thoughts and help.

You do not have to place the oil in the oven. I have made herbal oil without it. I have only used olive oil so I don’t have experience with the other oils, but be sure to shake the herbal oil every day. Make sure you fill the jar up with the herb, cover well with the oil and push air bubbles out with a wooden spoon. Cover tightly with a lid. Air and air bubbles will cause spoilage. Hope this helps!
