How To Make Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry syrup is what I call my homemade flu medicine. Elderberries are a great immune booster and are good for bronchitis, colds, coughing and especially the flu. They contain compounds that inhibit the flu from penetrating cell membranes and invading respiratory tract cells. You can take the elderberry syrup daily to help prevent the flu, or every hour if you have come down with the flu (or a cold, etc.)  This syrup is very beneficial to your health and it tastes great too!!!

How To Make Elderberry Syrup

1/2 cup dried elderberries
3 cups water
1 cup raw honey
Bring berries and water to a boil and simmer for about 30 minutes.  Mash berries and strain through a cheesecloth or a fine strainer.  Stir in honey and pour into jar.  Store in the refrigerator for 3 months.

Elderberry Syrup Oxymel

(Adding apple cider vinegar to this syrup turns it into an oxymel.  Apple cider vinegar gives extra benefits, but the recipe above with only honey is great too!)
2 cups dried elderberries
4 cups water
3 cups raw honey
Follow the same instructions as the recipe above.  This recipe lasts for 6 months in the fridge.
For both recipes:
Child – take 1 tsp. daily
Adults – take 1 tbsp. daily
(Or hourly if sick)

Though it does save a lot of money to make your own syrup, if you would like to buy some, you can.  This elderberry syrup is a good quality to buy.

Natural Remedies For PMS

Many women suffer from effects of PMS and some a lot worse than others ~ the symptoms of it can literally make their life and the lives of those around them miserable.  I don’t recommend medication or birth control pills to help you with this problem, there are safe and natural alternatives!  Below is a list of possible symptoms for PMS.

  • Abdominal bloating
  • Acne
  • Anxiety
  • Backache
  • Breast swelling and tenderness
  • Cramps
  • Depression
  • Food cravings
  • Fainting spells
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Altered sex drive
  • Swelling of fingers and ankles
  • Personality changes, including mood swings and outbursts of anger  


So, what can you do about this problem?  

*Get sunshine on a daily basis,  or take vitamin D supplements.  Having the adequate amount of this vitamin in your system helps prevent PMS.  Being out in the sunshine, without sunblock on, is better than just taking supplements, and it doesn’t cost anything!  Spend about 10 minutes a day in the direct sunlight to soak in that important vitamin D.  
*Of course I normally mention our diet – and that’s because a healthy diet will go a long ways in preventing and improving many ailments!  Greatly limit sugars, caffeine, sodas, fast food, processed foods, etc.  I know that it’s so convenient to grab these unhealthy things, but what we put in our mouths will determine what kind of health we’ll live with! 
*Take 2 Tbs. of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water.  You can add honey or black strap molasses if you have a hard time with just the vinegar.  Some use only the black strap molasses in water, but more success has been reported with the vinegar.  You can take this two weeks before your period, or every day. Women have reported no menstrual cramps, pms or headaches when they faithfully take this.  Below is my favorite kind of apple cider vinegar ~ it’s raw, organic, and full of living enzymes and nutrition!

*Here is a Dr. Christopher herbal formula for PMS

  • Fringe tree bark (20%)
  • Dandelion root (25%)
  • Artichoke leaf (20%)
  • Centaury herb (15%) (or gentian root)
  • Orange peel (10%)
  • Licorice (10%) 
  • Blend 1 tsp of the chopped or cut and sifted herbs/1 cup of boiling water, steep for 20-30 minutes, and drink 1 cup 2-3 times daily before meals. The individual tinctures can be added to water (1 tsp/cup,  2-3 x daily).

*This tincture kit below is one I highly recommend.
~There is a 1 lb.pre-two week combination of herbs that you take 2 weeks before your period.  Take 3-4 tbs. per day for severe months and 2-3 tsp. a day for normal months.  This combination contains chasteberry, ginseng, red raspberry, milk thistle, elderberry, dandelion, mustard seed, orange peel, nettle leaf, oat straw, lemon peel, ginger root, peppermint and feverfew.
~There is a 1/2 lb. pre-one week combination that you take 1 week before your period, and you can continue to take the pre-two week combination if you would like.  Take 2-3 Tbs. a day.  This contains the herbs
chasteberry, ginseng, red raspberry, milk thistle, St. John’s wort and wild yam.
~There is a 1/2 lb. cramp tincture in this kit also.  This contains cramp bark, white willow, chamomile flower, passion flower and Valerian root.  You take 1 TBSP every 30 minutes, until cramps subside and 2 tsp every 3-4 hrs after that during period.
Taking these herbs will not only help your symptoms, they will also give your body extra nutrition during this time.  Buying this kit of combined herbs will save a lot of money over buying them individually and it will last a long time.  I even recommend making the tinctures and splitting the cost with others you know that suffer from their monthly cycles.
