Using Essential Oils and Onion to Relieve Ear Pain

ear pain

Last week, one of my daughters had an earache out of no where.  She was begging me to do something fast.  I normally use colloidal silver for ear troubles, but silver doesn’t offer immediate pain relief.  This time I opted for essential oils and onion to relieve her pain.  And it worked immediately!

Using Essential Oils and Onion to Relieve Ear Pain

Ear Pain2

Eucalyptus Oil

The first thing I did was mix 1 drop of eucalyptus oil with 1 1/2 tsp. of olive oil.  Eucalyptus opens the Eustachian tube.  I rubbed this behind her ears, down her throat, and to her chest like this:

Rosemary Oil

I waited a few minutes and then combined one drop of rosemary essential oil to 1 1/2 tsp. of olive oil and applied it as I did in the picture above.  Rosemary fights infection. {Source}  It’s always important to treat both ears because infection can move back and forth between ears, or even be infecting an ear that isn’t hurting.

Onion

Lastly, I cut an onion in half and baked it at 450° for 15 minutes.  I left it on the counter until it was cool enough to handle, but still warm.  I applied one half of the onion to each of her ears and she experienced immediate relief.  Onion draws infection and congestion out of the ear {source}, making it a great remedy for ear infections and relieving ear pain.

You can leave the onion for 20-30 minutes, or even over night.  My daughter wanted to leave the onion on overnight, so we tied a piece of cloth around her head to help keep it in place {which looked hilariously adorable}.  It stayed in place for some of the night, but the next morning I found onion at the top of her pillow and her 4 year old sister snuggled up with the head wrap 😉 , but the onion seemed to stay in place long enough to do its job.  She experienced no more pain at all after this treatment!

Have you ever used oils or onion for ear pain?  What are your natural remedies for this?  I would love to hear it in the comments below!

I use one drop each of lavender and tea tree oil, dropped onto a cotton ball and place into the ear, just deep enough so it doesn’t fall out. In my personal experience, the pain is lessened within an hours time and completely gone by the next day.

We rarely have to care for ear infections, but when we do, I seep garlic in hot olive oil and when it cools, put a couple drops in the ear. (Thank you for the info. regarding the need to apply to both ears at once.) One time when at my mother-in-laws’s house, my daughter woke up with bad ear pain. There was no garlic available, so I looked up natural remedies and found onion to work similar to garlic. I seeped it in the hot olive oil, cooled and dropped into her ear………it took her ear pain away.

This is such a helpful post, Jill!

When my oldest children were little, we dealt with SO many earaches. Thankfully, those are few and far between now, but I can certainly attest to the benefits of essential oils, garlic, and onion!

Hi Jill, would these remedies work for plugged ears from flying?

I have been trying to order the progesterone cream from Beeyoutiful Balance. It tells me that it can not ship to my address. My address is a house address in Edmonton Alberta, Canada. You have some advice on how I can get that cream?

I would give Beeyoutiful a call for help with the shipping problem. 877-623-3968 Their products are great, so I hope it works out!

Jill, I just used this on my little one’s red, inflamed ear. The pain has lessened, but she keeps saying her ear is bubbling now??? I’m hoping this is a good thing, that the tube is opening up, pressure is coming down, and things are moving. Any thoughts?

Thanks so much for another wonderful post…this is my go to reference along with Rachel Weaver’s texts!

What a sweet compliment! 🙂 I love Rachel Weaver too!
Did you put anything in the ear? I have used colloidal silver many times for ear infections and it can make the ear feel bubbly. If you used onion, some of the juice may have gotten in the ear (which is good)- and that could do that. Onion is also very powerful and, like you said, it opens things up and it could be the fluid draining- which is good!

Yes, I’ve been using Hyland’s ear drops (I had a sample that came with my otoscope & started using it before I read about the colloidal silver). I have silver, but wasn’t sure about switching over to something different in the middle of the issue. I did use onion, as well. This is the first ear ache/infection at our house.

My daughter was reluctant about every part of this remedy, but she stopped complaining about the pain within half an hour. Thank you so much!!!!

I’m so glad she’s feeling better! We mamas hate to see them suffer. I’ve heard of Hyland’s ear drops – supposed to be a good company! Make sure you treat both ears as the infection can move back and forth between the 2. I always treat ear infections for 7-10 days to make sure it’s gone. Many times it flares back up if not properly treated. Once my children have no more pain, I may only do one drop a day in each ear.

Thank you so much for continuing to share. I have been treating both ears, but it is good to know about decreasing the dosage after the pain subsides 🙂
