Favorite Flu Remedies

I greatly enjoyed the winter wonderland walk I took in the woods recently. There’s nothing like standing in a forest of trees with snow hanging from the branches and covering the ground. These walks remind me of the reason I enjoy the beauty of winter. With this season also comes the dreaded flu for many. The holiday sugary treats from October to March result in run-down immune systems and more suseptibility to illness. That’s why I make sure my cabinets and refrigerator are stocked with natural medicines and immune boosters we need for good health and healing.

Here are some of my favorite remedies for the flu:

Elderberry Syrup {You can watch a video of me making this syrup here.}
I like to make elderberries into a syrup and keep it in the fridge all winter long.  For centuries, elder has been used for its medicinal properties. According to PubMed.gov, elderberries contain Sambucol, an antiviral substance that is especially effective against different strains of flu.
½ cup dried elderberries
3 cups water
1 cup raw honey
Place berries and water into a pan and bring to a boil. Simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and mash berries. Strain through a fine strainer. Stir in raw honey and pour syrup into a jar. This keeps in the refrigerator for 3 months.
Children – 1 tsp.
Adults – 1 tablespoon
To prevent the flu, take the dose daily. To treat the flu, take the dose hourly.

3 Natural Ways To Flu Prevention

First I will say that I do not believe that getting a flu shot is the best prevention for the flu, as we are consistently and continually told.
In my opinion, a person is worse off after receiving the flu shot. There are two main reasons that I do not receive nor recommend the flu shot:
  1. The flu vaccine has never been truly proven to be effective.

Each year, 200-300 different strains of the flu can go around; the vaccine protects against 2 of them.

2. In my opinion, the harmful ingredients contained in the vaccines are worse for our immediate and long-term health than actually getting the flu.

I will not take the time to go over each ingredient listed in each separate flu vaccine, but I will name a few of them: thirmerosal, formaldehyde, phosphate buffers, sodium phosphate, monosodium glutamate {MSG!}, and the list goes on!
Here are some of the possible side effects from the flu vaccine: significant respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms, seizure, allergic asthma , decreased appetite, increased mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, partial facial paralysis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, Bell’s palsy, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, herpes zoster [shingles]
The good news is that there are natural ways to help prevent the flu, and even shorten the miserable effects of the flu if you do come down with it!
While hand washing, exercise, less stress, adequate sleep and diet can all play a role in how often we get sick and how severe the sickness is, I’m focusing on 3 easy ways you can help prevent the flu.

Easy Recipe For Flu Tea

Are you as confused as me at all the hype about flu shots? Not too long ago when I was a kid {I’m not all that old yet ;)}, if you contracted the flu, you were miserable for a while and then got over it. Now I scratch my head in confusion at the pressure put on everyone to get a “flu shot”, especially considering that the possible side effects of the vaccine are worse than getting the flu itself, and the flu vaccine has never been proven to be effective.

What does make sense to me is the fact that no one wants to contract an illness that puts life on hold for a while, and that can also become dangerous for certain people. The good news is that you can help prevent the flu naturally with no harmful side effects! You can also lessen the duration of the flu if you do come down with it! One good way of helping to prevent the flu is by making flu tea!
